“Any building will shelter one from the elements, but only a work of architecture will shelter the soul.”

As the founder of Kariouk Architects, Paul is passionately dedicated to the artistry of architecture and has been his entire life. From his early years growing up, going to school and practicing architecture in New York City to working on design projects all over the world, Paul found immediate joy developing his practice in Ottawa, Canada.

While teaching at several universities over his early career years, Paul became familiar with the incredible reputation of Carleton University and sought out a faculty position as Associate Professor with tenure at Carleton’s Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism in Ottawa. Paul has lived all around the world and sees Ottawa as a place that’s simultaneously educated, unpretentious, and eager to find its own identity while offering a high-quality of life.

Always generous in sharing his knowledge, Paul can be found volunteering his expertise at public meetings on topics of progressive urban renewal and sustainability, and occasionally appearing on CBC Radio as a guest commentator.

Every day at the firm, Paul works to ensure that design excellence never takes a backseat to project management and logistics. Revisiting the finer details of iteration after iteration leads to final products that go far beyond good or satisfactory. Instead, they become extraordinary, singular works.

Paul is an exceptional listener. Starting from scratch with each client they work with, Paul and his team are in constant pursuit of the perfect marriage between the people they work with and the spaces they live in. The creation of soulful architecture requires a sincere bond between all the collaborators. Paul’s clients share Kariouk Architects’ values and Paul is so proud that every single client over the last twenty years has become a close friend.

A lover of peaceful quiet, Paul is a voracious reader who relishes the joy and creativity that comes from unstructured thinking and personal reflection. A long hike in the woods with his dog, Jethro, or an afternoon spent immersed in a good book is all he needs to recharge.

Working as an architect for close to 20 years, Chris has relished the opportunity to influence the urban landscape and see his designs become a reality.

As a Senior Associate with Kariouk Architects, Chris is tasked with overseeing every aspect of every project. The role involves constant collaboration with colleagues and clients, as well as the finer details of construction documents and detailing, and thorough review of project execution.

When it comes to the matter of what makes for good architecture, Chris is quick to point out that quality does not always require a massive budget. Instead, it’s a close examination of site surroundings, unexpected use of common materials, structural finesse and bringing the outside in that can have a powerful impact on the final product.

When Chris isn’t immersed in all things architecture, travelling with his wife and children is one of his favourite ways to refresh and recharge.

Art has always been a passionate focus for Adam, allowing him to communicate in unique ways and express his architectural ideas as effortlessly through painting and sketching as through words. (Adam is humble about this gift, but Paul is always pointing out how Adam can draw like a wizard.)

As an intern architect, Adam can be found doing a vast array of things on any given day. From schematic design and digital model making to engineer coordination and field review reports; he is an architectural jack-of-all-trades and can be counted on to assist at every step of the design and construction process.

When Adam isn’t deep in technical drawings or on site visits, you will find him tapping into his creativity with painting and sketching or playing soccer with his league.
