We’re thrilled to announce that our m.o.r.e. Cabin has won a Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects New York (AIA NY) 2024 Design Awards.
This is one of the most prestigious and competitive architecture competitions in the world so, as you can imagine, we’re very proud of this achievement.
The awards program recognizes outstanding architectural design by AIA New York members, New York City-based architects in any location, and work in New York City by architects from around the globe. While Kariouk Architects is based in Ottawa, Paul Kariouk, our principal, studied and practiced in New York and maintains his license in that state.
Paul commented, “While ours was the smallest project in terms of its size (and certainly budget), I’m grateful that the jury deemed it to be of equal architectural quality as several enormous projects completed by some of the most accomplished architects on the world stage, such as Herzog & de Meuron, Jeanne Gang, Thomas Pfifer, and Alberto Campo Baeza.”
He added, “I think that giving such a prestigious award to such a small project is a sign that small buildings, which are inherently more sustainable because they are more resource-efficient, are becoming more respected. I hope we see more small-footprint projects from other architects winning awards all over the world. To paraphrase the inspiring words of the Slovenian Architect, Josip Plecnik, which serve as a sort of rudder for Kariouk Architects, ‘Don’t give me great things; give me small things and these I will (aim) to make great.’”
Thank you to the AIA New York for honouring our m.o.r.e. Cabin with a Merit Award in your 2024 Design Awards. We are thrilled to be in great company! You can view all the award winners on the AIA New York’s website.
